Newport News, Va. – The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) is highlighting the swift, decisive actions of its Marine Incident Response Team (MIRT) following a dangerous water rescue during severe weather on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Jimmy Auvil of Smithfield, Va., was fishing near the Monitor–Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel with his 14‑year‑old son and his son’s friend when rapidly deteriorating weather conditions placed them in immediate danger. After relocating closer to the James River Bridge, the group anchored approximately 30 feet from the bridge. As storm clouds intensified sooner than expected, Auvil prepared to return to shore. When the boat’s engine failed to start, conditions worsened dramatically.

Within minutes, heavy rain, swirling clouds, and strong winds began pushing and rocking the vessel. A severe weather alert warning of a possible tornado was issued downstream, and the juveniles were sheltered inside the boat’s console compartment while Auvil contacted emergency resources. With commercial towing and federal assets facing delays, the U.S. Coast Guard requested immediate assistance from the Newport News Fire Department.

Fire Boat 1 and Fire Boat 2 were dispatched and arrived on scene in approximately 10 minutes.

Despite dangerous marine conditions, NNFD crews executed a rapid and coordinated rescue. Firefighters safely transferred the two juveniles to a fire boat and urged Auvil to evacuate as the storm intensified. All three were transported to shore without injury. Crews then returned to secure the disabled vessel.

“Marine emergencies can escalate in moments, especially during severe weather,” NNFD leadership noted. “Our firefighters’ training, teamwork, and commitment to public safety made a life‑saving difference.”

Auvil later expressed deep gratitude for NNFD’s efforts, praising the firefighters’ calm professionalism and courage during the chaotic event.

“As a parent, I am beyond thankful that my son and his friend made it home safely,” Auvil said. “The City of Newport News should be incredibly proud of these firefighters and the marine rescue capabilities they provide. If not for them, I’m not sure what would have happened.”

The Newport News Fire Department encourages boaters to monitor weather conditions closely, maintain proper safety equipment, and have an emergency plan in place before heading out on the water.
