Richmond Public Schools (RPS) has launched RVA Men Teach, an initiative to increase educator diversity throughout the division.
Under the leadership of the 2019 National Teacher of the Year and RPS Senior Advisor Rodney Robinson, RVA Men Teach aims to improve students’ academic, social, and professional outcomes by recruiting, retaining, and professionally developing culturally competent male educators of color.
“I am excited about this initiative because during my tenure as National Teacher of the Year, I met numerous educators who are passionate about this work and we are building a nationwide network of support that hopes to benefit all children in America,” said Rodney Robinson. “I am thrilled that RPS made this commitment to cultural equity in their strategic plan because all students benefit from a diverse educator workforce.”
RVA MenTeach will consist of several components including professional development, support for licensure and teacher certification, partnerships with organizations to support teacher recruitment, and recognition of the accomplishments of male educators of color.
To kick-off RVA Men Teach, RPS will host a virtual town hall led by Mr. Robinson and student advocate, Corey Stuckey. They will be joined by RPS educators, community leaders, and college administrators for a discussion on recruiting and investing in male teachers of color. The session is a part of the RPS Civic Voice Town Hall Series and will be streamed Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 6pm from the RPS Facebook page.
