Newport News homeowners struggling with housing costs can now apply for help through a new city grant program.
The ResidentFirst Housing Relief Grant Program, which began accepting applications Thursday, provides income-based housing assistance to eligible homeowners who live in the city. The program has $300,000 available, and grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the money runs out. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 31; those submitted after the deadline will not be processed.
“We understand the real financial pressures affecting residents across our community,” Vice Mayor Curtis D. Bethany III said. “This initiative puts real dollars back into the hands of homeowners who need support most, while also serving as a pilot for future efforts to expand and strengthen relief based on real needs and results.”
Bethany said the program reflects a targeted approach to relief under the leadership of the City Council.
To qualify, applicants must own and live in their Newport News home, meet the program’s household income requirements and show that housing costs equal or exceed 30% of their total combined household income for 2026. Additional eligibility requirements apply.
Residents may apply online or submit a paper application. Applicants must provide documentation verifying household income and housing costs.
Residents who need help applying can contact the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office at 757-926-8653 or cts@nnva.gov. In-person assistance is available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2400 Washington Ave. and at the satellite office at 12912 Jefferson Avenue.
