Is your child’s car seat installed properly?Henrico Police will check at upcoming events

The Henrico County Police Division will offer opportunities next week for parents and caregivers to make sure they know the correct way to install a child’s car seat.

Child Safety Seat Check-Up events are scheduled for:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9900 Ridgefield Parkway
  • Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Target at White Oak Village, 4521 S. Laburnum Ave.

Held in conjunction with Child Passenger Safety Week, the events are designed to help participants properly install a child’s car seat or booster seat. Participants should bring the seat and its manual or instructions; the child who uses the seat; and any caregivers who transport the child in a vehicle using the seat, if possible.

The events, which are free and open to all metro-area residents, will include children’s activities, giveaways and vendors highlighting children’s safety.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), whereas most parents and caregivers are confident that they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, 46% of car seats actually are installed incorrectly. A properly installed and used car seat can reduce the risk of death of a child in a vehicular accident by 71%, according to the NHTSA.

Child Safety Seat Check-Ups are planned rain or shine; in the event of severe inclement weather, they will be rescheduled.
