Virginia House Democrats today celebrated a historic turning point for the Commonwealth following the inauguration of Abigail Spanberger, Ghazala Hashmi, and Jay Jones.

Governor Spanberger is the first woman Governor of Virginia, Lieutenant Governor Hashmi is the first Muslim American woman elected statewide, and Attorney General Jones is the first Black Attorney General in the Commonwealth’s history.

House Democratic leaders said today’s inauguration represents more than historic firsts — it marks the beginning of a new era focused on governing, collaboration, and delivering real results for Virginians.

Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Don Scott said:

“Today is a powerful moment for Virginia — not just because history was made, but because Virginians chose leaders who are ready to govern. This new administration reflects the people we serve and the future we are building.
